I AM LIBERTY
THE CREATION PROCESS

Picture
In November of 2013, we believe God put it on the hearts of our leaders to begin working towards creating a show addressing the issue of human trafficking. We felt called to research the topic well-reading books, researching online, watching videos, attending conferences. We also felt called to share real stories so we began seeking out people to talk to personally who had been through experiences involving the industry. We had the privilege of interviewing 5 incredible women, 3 of whom know Jesus Christ at different levels. In September 2014 we knew we wanted to pursue creating this show by the end of the school year. We began looking more closely at storyline, music, and concept, feeling that the Lord was calling us to share someone’s story even though we didn’t know who she was. In January we joined our two college teams and began full-fledged choreographing and creating in preparation for the debut release in March 2015. In creating this show the Lord has brought so much vision, details, and miracles all into alignment with His perfect timing-in more ways than we can describe!

Our desire in this show is three-fold:
Raise Awareness  -  of this issue and its reality within North America
Spark Hope - Christ is victorious, even in the lives of these victims.
Inspire Action - What is our role in this fight for freedom?

I Am Liberty: The Story and the Purpose

I am Liberty is an intense and personal portrayal of a young girl finding herself in a romantic relationship with a man who turns out to be a trafficking recruiter, throwing her into a world of darkness and chaos. Our story goes through the emotional, psychologically manipulative, and overall destructive situations of being abused, sold, and valued as worthless by so many. As freedom slowly becomes a distant dream for Liberty, hope is inspired in unexpected ways.

Our desire through this performance is to raise awareness in Canada of this significant issue.  We want to help North Americans understand this is not just an “overseas problem” but it is actually right in our own backyard. We desire to warn youth and vulnerable persons of the realities of trafficking, inspire hope in anyone we can reach that may be stuck in this in some way, and see a significant difference made in our world today. We want to see men, women, and children set free, and we want to invite others to join us in the fight for freedom. Together we can change the world.

PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS

These organizations who are committed to fighting the horrific reality of human trafficking were represented at our debut and continue to be part of our journey, specifically Defend Dignity.

DEFEND DIGNITY

Defend Dignity acts as a catalyst for individuals and churches to end sexual exploitation in Canada.  Commercial sexual exploitation includes: pornography, strip clubs, escorts, massage parlors and prostitution.  All involve the selling of sexual services which undermine the dignity of women, men and children and are detrimental to a healthy society.

Defend Dignity works to end all sexual exploitation through:

  • Raising awareness on the realities of all forms of sexual exploitation through events and resources.
  • Aiding individuals, non-profits and faith organizations to come alongside victims and at risk youth, through resources and training.
  • Advocacy for law and policy reform.

Mission

The Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada believes:

  • in the inherent dignity and value of all women, men and children made in the image of God.
  • prostitution is a form of sexual exploitation, oppression and violence especially against women and children and seriously undermines their dignity and value
  • prostitution is detrimental to a healthy society
The Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada is therefore committed to the abolition of prostitution by:

  • raising awareness and public education on prostitution, sexual exploitation and sex trafficking
  • advocating for stronger legal and social deterrents to eliminate both the illicit demand for and the selling of sex
  • developing resources to empower our congregations to take action against prostitution, sexual exploitation and sex trafficking

INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE MISSION

JUSTICE IS OUR MIDDLE NAME
We’re International Justice Mission
and we believe that justice for the poor is possible.
We are a global organization that protects the poor from violence in the developing world. Our global team includes hundreds of lawyers, investigators, social workers, community activists and other professionals at work in nearly 20 communities.

OUR WORK HAPPENS BY:
  • RESCUING VICTIMS
  • Get them out of the place where they’re in danger
  • BRINGING CRIMINALS TO JUSTICE
  • Hold slave-owners, traffickers, rapists and criminals accountable in court
  • RESTORING SURVIVORS
  • Give them the support and tools they need to heal and thrive
  • STRENGTHENING JUSTICE SYSTEMS
  • Stop violence before it starts by helping strengthen the local justice system
OUR MODEL:
Justice System Transformation
We don’t stop at rescuing people after they have been abused. Our ultimate goal is to prevent the violence from happening in the first place. Our unique model to drive maximum-impact, long-term change through all our work is called Justice System Transformation. We partner with local governments and communities to meet both urgent and long-term needs.

Explore the 3 phases of Justice System Transformation:
Phase 1 | Collaborative Casework We partner with local authorities to rescue individual victims of a specific crime, bring criminals to justice and restore survivors. More
Phase 2 | System Reform We continue Collaborative Casework and launch intense, collaborative projects that aim to dramatically improve the justice system’s response to the targeted crime. More
Phase 3 | Sustain Gains We monitor and evaluate results and continue to support our local government partners. More
